The Matrifen transdermal patch can be used for chronic pain in osteoarthritis patients, pheumatoid arthritis patients, patients with respiratory depression, hypoventilation and cognitive impairment.

It has fewer adverse effects compared to morphine tablets and other oral formulations of opiod analgesics and is approximately 50 to 100 times as potent as morphine.
